VAKARAI EDUCATION EMPOWERMENT PROJECT (VEEP)

Project objective

  1. Reduce Drop-out and early marriage of teenage girls by provide residential facilities to continue their education.
  2. Increase school attendance rate of teenage girl students.
  3. Strengthen child education of war affected area.
  4. Increase the student achievement level of education in Vakarai surrounding area.
  5. Enhance quality and access to education
  6. Increase the literacy rate of schooling aged population in the division.
  7. Ensure the National education policy of 13-year compulsory education
  8. Reduce child abuse activities while on the way to school by provide residential facility.
  9. Strengthen the education system and facilities of Government School in this division.

 

Background / Present scenario of the project catchment area

Kalkudah Educational Zone is severely affected by internal conflict for 30 years. There are several, both death and possession losses are happened due to this conflict. As a result of this, there are so many children without either one or both parents and they are living with their grandparents or their close relations. From this situation there are several child right issues have been observed. Furthermore, there are no of children without parental care due to the mother migration to abroad such as middle east / West Asia. But this migrant mothers are sent as an unskilled labor and they earn very less amount there for their family. Moreover, schools and villages are isolated from urban area due to the no common transportation facilities, then access to school is very difficult due to the unavailable of public transport. As a result of these problems there are many children dropout their school and the rate of early marriage of teenage girls’ increase rapidly in Vakarai surrounded area. Usually students use path way to go to school through the forest area. Sometimes they are unable to go to school through this area due to the trouble of wild animals such as elephant, snakes. In the rainy season, student attendance is very low due to the danger of pathway that damage by the rainy flood.

Here we observed that, after the grade 5, students have to go to secondary school, Bt/Kk/Vakarai Maha Vidyalayam, but due to the above mentioned problems students dropped out after grade 5. Even if some students are enrolled after grade 5, after few month or grade, they drop out from this school. Hence many children fail to complete the compulsory education and they lose their rights to education. 

 

Main problems

  • Increment of dropout rate and the early marriage of teenage girls of Vakarai surrounding area.
  • There are large number of children without parental care due to mother – migration to western Asian and middle east.
  • During the bad weather season, student attendance is very low by danger pathway to school.
  • No public transport to schools.
  • Wild animals attack while go to school
  • Season job

 

Required Educational intervention by this programme

Mainly the students who studying in this school will tracking benefits of this project and Selected other school grade 5 students who are residing close to Vakarai area will be selected to this project. The continue project’s process will be monitored by Zonal Director of Education, Deputy & Assistant Director of Education and Probation Officers from Divisional secretariat and The maintenance part of this project will be carried out by the school management and the school community. Community support will be encouraged in various way during the continues process. Provincial Director of Education will be chief Director of this long term process.

 

Justification

In the public school system absorbs 100% of the children while only 70% students go to grade 6, 16% students are go to grade 11, 5% students are go to advanced level and no anyone student go to university from this area about last 15 years. Early marriage rate of this area is highly increasing every year (Reference MHO Report) and increasing Drop out. Students involvement in Curricular and co-curricular activities is very low in around this area by unsuitable environment conditions, so this project will provide suitable environment conditions and it will inspire teacher’s dedication and commitment toward helping the pupils and students for a high level of achievements.

 

Direct beneficiaries

The project will directly benefit to the students who are presently enrolled in the school to be covered by the project area. It will also valuable benefits to the students who will go dropout by different problems. And it also benefits to the school teachers who coming from long distance to this area schools.

 

Social Benefits

The project will eventually increase the learning performance level of students, this will ultimately along with other factors such as effective educational system, and availability of appropriate learning material, suitable learning environment, it will increase literacy rate of students who can contribute to the socio-economic development of society.

The project will help to curving down school drop-outs and provide opportunity for out of school youths to attend school again. The project will also provide better working environment for teachers and other education related staff.

 

Economic benefits

This being an education sector proposal, there are no foreseen economic costs associated with the project. This project will presumably increase the number of students who would attend school opportunities in the area and it will be increase Foreign Exchange by getting foreign job.

 

Teaching learning interactions

After school tutorial facility for conducting tutorial classes as a remedial measure to improve academic performance of slow-learners. being that the students can have better interactions about their study among one another and can be better informed through such interactions. Most importantly, the students must develop the habit of living by oneself and gain self confidence in life by living outside their own homes, which is required of a competent medical professional whose place of work is likely to be global.

The hostel buildings have provision for reading and studying to students and Teachers. In this new life style student learns to live independently, and learn how to compromise with the other students and roommates. While living in hostel students share their personal ideology with other students, and learn many new ideas from their hostel fellows. Hostel life also influences the students’ views and perceptions about the religion. Hostel life also makes students more ambitious, those students who have stayed in hostels are more self-reliant and confident than other students. In hostels students learns courage and spirit from other students, and that may help students to face the practical life more confidently.  Hostel life going to change the way a student is, its effect on the personality behavior, thinking, and dressing as well. In hostel students are surrounded by other students of about the same age as they are, all those students have different characteristics

Theory perspective teaching –Learning environments are situated in teaching-learning interactions, this project will be providing a suitable environmental condition.  Life at the hostels positively affects them academically, physically, emotionally, and psychologically. The environment at the hostels should teach to learners’ moral, character development, interaction with other students and also improve student demonstration to the low learners. Peer tutorial has been implemented as a supplemental resource for students in introductory level subjects. The tutor benefits since in explaining things and

 

Presently involved main partners

Provincial Department of Education, EP, Zonal Education office, Divisional Education Office, School Development Society, and Divisional Secretariat of Koralai Pattu-North are presently active partner of this project. In future any other person or institute can be added as a partner of this project.
